Answering The What Question

Since we have announced our plans for the BFF journey, this question is the one we are asked most often even though it has the least amount of impact to those that ask it.  The answer to this question is not one we are really fully able to provide.  When we are able to give a complete answer, it will not even be the most interesting one. Despite this, the question isn't a bad one to ask, to the contrary, it is the one we wrestle with the most.

In this post, I am going to provide the answer to that question as it stands today and the reason why it is not important.

First I would like to talk about the “daily grind”.  If we think of the word grind, some thoughts come to mind.  I think of the wearing down of mechanical components.  Coffee drinkers might think of the granular substance left behind when you crush/grate coffee beans. What do you think of when you consider your daily responsibilities?  If it is something similar to these definitions, you are not alone.

According to Gallup, the total percentage of people engaged in the work that they do is only 13%. This is actually up 11% from the previous years report.  While we are on the topic of employment, what are your happiness triggers?  Are you sure getting a raise would make you happier?  Perhaps for a short period of time it will.  Those feelings are not around for long as the daily grind will wear that happiness out of you if you are not engaged in what you are doing.

As this article interesting points out, the surest path to happiness is found in actively engaging in the pursuit of faith, family, community, and work.

You have come this far and I have not revealed the question.  While it is believed that waiting an hour before you see a monster is good for a movie, in our example we do not have a monster and having you read for an hour probably will not do.  Therefore the top question asked is…  What are you going to do about your job/money?

I started with the engagement statistics because I wanted to point out to you why this question is not always important.  For those that are the lucky 13%, of which I have been a part of in my current position from time to time, they are already pursuing work that they find an immense amount of value in and are satisfying the pursuit of work.  When it comes to work I am not consistently part of the engaged and it is through no fault of anyone but myself.

Lets talk a bit about money.  How much does it cost for you to live the life you lead?  What are the most important things in your life?  If you could have everything you need while satisfying your pursuit of faith, family, community, and work, would you give up the things that you want?  This is the question we asked ourselves to which we answered, absolutely.  Money is a concern of ours but it is not the most important piece of our journey.

You may have noticed that I am answering a small piece of the complicated question “why are we doing this” more than I am the question asked.  You will see in most of our articles we will be answering the why question more than the others because that is the one that will have the greatest impact and is the reason for all that we are doing.  However, I still owe you an answer for reading this long.

What am I going to do about my job/money?  It is looking like I am going to eventually be leaving my job of which I will have had a very successful (in corporate terms) 8 years.  We have saved up enough money so that it won’t be a major concern for a while. While on our journey, we will be looking for opportunities to generate income.  This income will be used to sustain our journey along with providing inspiration and entertainment to you.  The financial details of our journey I will share in later posts.
